Vitamin uptake in prokaryotes is achieved by ECF (energy coupling factor) transporters. They are trans-membrane proteins of which their structure and transport mechanism is largely unknown however they transport substrates from one side of the membrane to the other. These ECF transporters contain a membrane-embedded substrate-binding protein known as the S-component. The S component is responsible for substrate binding and is specific to certain substrates.
In the case of Staphylococcus aureus, the ECF transporter we are particularly interested in is the ECF-type riboflavin transporter. The S component of this ECF transporter is known as RibU and it transports Riboflavin from the periplasm to the cytoplasm of the bacterium.

This study is a step towards understanding the mechanisms of ECF transporters. Presently there is little knowledge of S component interactions or ATP hydrolysis by the A components – more biochemical and structural studies are required.

Nice clear layout.
ReplyDeleteBut how do you navigate back to the 'home' page from other pages on the site? Is this something you could add?
Nice and simple. Easy to follow. Well done!
ReplyDeleteNIce and clear information given in a simple layout making it easy to understand. Great job on the works done =)

Hey Guys,
ReplyDeleteWe loved your layout, it makes your blog look fun!
Nicely laid out, not lots of text, and your pymol video was short and sweet! We also liked your use of diagrams; they broke up the text (and they looked nice!)
Good job!

Very nice blog, fun background, very easy to read, supportive images, and good scientific explanations. Not many drawbacks I should say. Well done!
ReplyDeletefunky background! Makes it much more accessible than an actual scientific paper. Each section is a good length too, nice to read. Good stuff!
